It ended up being a pretty light day today. We went downtown for a Maine Duck Tour which was partially good and partially lame. Our guide/narrator, Al, was great!!! He did a fantastic job of narrating and making it interesting. Driving through downtown we learned quite a bit about the different landmarks and history of the city. For instance, the popular emblem that represents Portland is the Phoenix because a Phoenix rises from the ashes and Portland did just that – four times throughout its history. Three times from wars and once from 4th of July fireworks. They began building their structures from brick and stone so it wouldn’t happen again. The tour took a dive, though, when ironically the bus turned into a floating vessel. We went in the water and just floated around for about half an hour (the entire tour was only an hour) – pretty much going nowhere. We could see the launch point the entire time. Granted that big ole thang didn’t go very fast, but I’m not sure what the point was other than proving it could float. Al did a great job filling the time with stories (of the city, his family life and various other humorous stories) but it was mostly fluff just filling time.

We grabbed some lunch at the place on the corner called Dewey’s. It was delicious!! Very simple meal but oh so good. Washed it down with a local River Trip from Allagash (our favorite from yesterday) and just milled about downtown for a while. Went through some stores and found some wonderful handmade items from some street vendors. Came back to the hotel around 4:00 and had some chill time, had some FaceTime with our granddaughter who is turning TEN tomorrow!! Not sure how all that happened!!! Then about 7:30 we bolted out to hustle to Portland Head Lighthouse for some sunset thrills. It did not disappoint. AND we got an almost full moon rising as well!! Grabbed dinner at the hotel since it was so late and we’re up and outta here early in the morning for our week in Bar Harbor (pronounced Baa Haa Baa around here – LOL)

And that’s a wrap for today!
